§ Beginning in 2024, unused funds held in a 529 account can be rolled over to a Roth IRA (individual retirement account) for the beneficiary if the account meets certain requirements. Penalty-free rollovers can be made if the account has been open for more than 15 years, and the amount to be rolled over must have been in the account for a minimum of five years. This rollover allowance has a $35,000 lifetime cap per beneficiary.
